Most lay down tanning beds have these "squares" cut out of the long tube type lamps. These are called "facials"... and behind the blue glass, they hold a short, fat, high pressure bulb similar to the one pictured here. The glass is a special "blue filter" glass designed to diffuse the high wattage bulbs, which are usually 400 watts, but 500w, 1000w, and even 2000 watt bulbs and tanning systems exist.  Keep in mind the benefit of a facial bulb is that it emitsthis is a picture of a high pressure tanning bed facial bulb only UVA light, not the harmful UVB rays which are heavily regulated.  This means this tanning lamp is a 100% bronzing device however, you must have melanin present in your top layer of skin to see any results from a session with high pressure facial bulbs ONLY in a tanning bed.  In other words, you must have a "base tan" before reaping the benefits of this bulb.  Most dermatologists recommend covering the face when you tan and manufacturers have installed a "on-off" switch to help you regulate the length of time you expose your face to 100% UVA light.  In a tanning salon's three or four level system, each level of tanning beds will have more and more of these high pressure facial lamps until you reach the "high pressure tanning bed" level, like the UV Scan 360 pictured below, which has only these type of lamps.

Tanning salons usually have 3-4 levels of tanning beds... this is a picture of the Royal Sun high pressure tanning bed
including level 1 beds which are usually the 20 minute "starter" beds, level 2 are 15 minute beds with 100 watt bulbs, and level 3 tanning beds are the 10-12 minute beds with some combination of 160 watt bulbs. Finally, level 4 beds and higher are the "high pressure" class. The term high pressure indicates the bulb was manufactured under pressure and will explode when broken, so be careful with these. A level 1,2,3 or 4 bed may contain high pressure facial bulbs, which look like a 12 inch square of "blue filter glass" which helps diffuse this powerful light. When a tanning bed contains ONLY these high pressure bulbs is it considered a true high pressure tanning bed.  Buy my eBook below and I will give you more information on high pressure tanning beds...
